Kathryn Smith is a tax partner at Milestone Advisors, focused on small business clients, and has been in the profession about twenty years. A few years ago her firm reached a point most small firms recognize. It was maxed out on staff, hiring at partner level had proven difficult, and the firm began turning away new clients because there was no one to serve them.
The Ceiling
The fix was obvious and the firm could not execute it. “You’re trying to focus on getting the work done and recruiting people, and trying to find the right person takes a lot of time and effort.” Every hour spent on recruiting came out of client work, and every hour spent on client work left the recruiting undone. The firm held steady and stopped growing.
What Changed
Once they joined, Milestone was able to leverage Baysora’s recruiting team. Milestone has since added partners and staff at several levels, and the firm reopened to new clients.
Kathryn also shares another advantage to being part of Baysora’s network: “Baysora has an AI director who helps us implement AI in our firm. If we were a small firm just internally, without outside resources, it would be really hard to implement AI to the level that I think we’re able to.” The partners still run the practice the way they want to, which is the part she says surprises other firms most.
Results Achieved
Since joining, the firm has:
- Reopened to new clients after staffing had closed the door
- Added partners and staff at several levels through Baysora’s recruiting team
- Started implementing AI with support the firm would not have had on its own
- Kept the small-firm culture the partners deliberately chose to work
